I’m Brittany, The Spoon Girl
Everything you see here is designed, created, and shipped by me!
I'm a jeweler and sculptor specializing in the use of found metal objects, silverware, and kitchenware. I aim to breathe new life into these objects and therefore a new interpretation and purpose; a process called "upcycling". I find it an intriguing challenge to transform old and unwanted items into a new and beautiful form, but ultimately one that I find ethically responsible in this era of consumerism. Inspired by nature, my work reflects the importance of sustainability and honors the flora and fauna of the Earth.
The materials I use are often found in yard sales, resale shops, and friends' basements and attics, things eventually bound for the landfill. Most are tarnished and rusted, twisted and dinged...but if you look closely through the years of age, you’ll see the meticulous design and delicate details in old silver spoon, something that is not found in today’s mass-produced products. You'll find monograms or a child's name and the date they were born, representing a history of family heirlooms long forgotten. The rainbow patina, beautiful in itself, reflects years of oxidation that many only see as dirty and unusable. I see the character, the stories, and potential in that old spoon; it's already a piece of art. Through upcycling, I can restore the charm and bring someone else joy for many more years to come.
I’ve been focused on repurposing silverware since 2014. It all started with a metalsmithing class at NMU in Marquette, MI.
When I’m not in my workshop or attending and selling my work at music festivals, you can find me in my garden, caring for my houseplants, hiking, foraging, working on improvement projects, or rock-hounding at the beach.
